DESCRIPTION:Captains Fantastic: The Eldridge Brothers of Yarmouth Port Author Vincent Miles will discuss how John\, Asa and Oliver Eldridge of Yarmouth Port were three of America's most distinguished mariners in the mid-19th century\, during a "golden age" in U.S. maritime history that profoundly influenced the country's development. The talk will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Yarmouth New Church following All Around the Common open houses on the Yarmouth Port Common\, Route 6A. The Eldridges' careers both illustrate and explain that golden age and highlight a remarkable accomplishment by all three brothers that may never have been achieved by any other shipmaster. Miles is the author of "The Lost Hero of Cape Cod: Captain Asa Eldridge" and "The Maritime Trade that Shaped America\," published by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth. The open houses will be at the Captain Bangs Hallet House\, The Edward Gorey House\, the Yarmouth New Church and the Winslow Crocker House from 1 to 4 p.m. The talk and tours are free.
