SUMMARY:Renowned shipmaster of Yarmouth Port
DESCRIPTION:Renowned Shipmaster of Yarmouth Port Vin Miles of Yarmouth Port\, author of "The Lost Hero of Cape Cod: Captain Asa Eldridge\," will present a lecture based on his book at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod on March 20 at 2 p.m. Born in the little village of Yarmouth Port in 1809\, Eldridge became one of the world's greatest shipmasters. He still holds the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a sailing ship\, from New York to Liverpool in 1854 In recounting Eldridge's fascinating career\, Miles also tells the broader story of the rise of America's merchant navy to a dominant position over Britain's in the decades following the War of 1812. Miles also wrote "The Maritime Trade that Shaped America\," published by the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth. The program is the third in the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth's winter lecture series. The in-person program will follow the Cultural Center's safety requirements for indoor ticketed events: to provide proof of Covid vaccination or a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours. Admission is $10 and register. Pay through HSOY.org/events or at the door. The Cultural Center is at 307 Old Main St.\, South Yarmouth.
