Monuments Men: The Yarmouth Port Library
The Yarmouth Port Library Presents Monuments Men With Art Historian Mary Woodward Friday, March 27th at 1:00 PM This is the story of the men and women of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives division of the US Army during World War II… the Monuments Men. They risked their lives to protect, salvage, restore and return works of art that were systematically damaged, destroyed, misappropriated or stolen in Europe between the years 1933 and 1945. Though hundreds of thousands of items remain missing or destroyed, through the efforts of the Monuments Men, five million objects were recovered, saving important pieces of history and culture for posterity. Mary’s presentation will also feature up to date information about restitution claims in process even now. Mary Woodward is a Cape Cod-based art historian and educator affiliated with Historic New England and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. She holds a BA and MA in Art History from Fuller University and Emory University. She has years of experience in museums of all shapes and sizes. Space is limited.
