Icelandic Sagas, Cape Cod, & Nantucket Sound: Webinar Series
"Cape Cod, Nantucket Sound, & the Icelandic Vinland Mystery"
The Alliance continues its popular ACONS (A Celebration of Nantucket Sound) webinar series on October 17 at 6pm with Neil Good, a lifelong researcher and member of the Massachusetts Archeological Society. Neil has dedicated more than 40 years studying the 300+ year old debate over the early Norse discovery and exploration of America. In this special presentation hosted by the Alliance, he will unravel the evidence linking Cape Cod and Nantucket Sound to Vinland, the area settled by 11th-century Norsemen as described in the Vinland Sagas.
Highlights:
- Waquoit Bay as Leifsbuðir: Good will present his findings on why Waquoit Bay could be the true location of Leif Eriksson's settlement described in the Graenlendinga Saga.
- Mashpee Wampanoag Influence: Good’s compelling reasoning behind the role the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe may have played in the Norse decision to abandon Vinland.
- Academic Endorsement: Explore insights endorsed by academic experts and Norwegian researcher Johannes Kr. Tornöe, who placed Vínland in Waquoit Bay in the 1960s.
Good's presentation will shed light on how Cape Cod and Nantucket Sound's unique geography may have been remembered and recorded by the Norse explorers and their descendants.
A live Q&A with Neil and Save Our Sound President Audra Parker will follow the presentation.
