Songbird Banding on the Cape & Islands
Join the Alliance for its ACONS (A Celebration of Nantucket Sound) webinar series with master bird bander Libby Buck for an insightful talk on the science of bird banding at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation’s new banding station. Discover how researchers track migrating songbirds that have traveled to Nantucket, including those coming from across Nantucket Sound. Learn what bird banding reveals about bird populations and how this work contributes to conservation efforts. This Zoom event offers a behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating world of bird migration research! A live Q&A with Libby and Alliance President Audra Parker will follow the presentation.
Libby Buck, who was raised on Cape Cod, deeply appreciates the coastal habitats surrounding her. This upbringing sparked her lifelong curiosity about the environment, motivating her to share her knowledge with others. As the Conservation Scientist and Land Steward at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, she is actively involved in ecological research, habitat restoration, and land management across 275 acres of protected land on Nantucket. With expertise in wildlife ecology and bird conservation, Libby is committed to understanding Nantucket's ecosystems and preserving its unique and rare habitats.
As a licensed Master Bird Bander, Libby has started a new migration bird banding station on Nantucket, contributing valuable data to bird conservation efforts. She is also the compiler for the Nantucket Christmas Bird Count, where she compiles all the data and organizes over 70 volunteers. Additionally, Libby serves as a Birdability Captain, advocating for inclusive birding experiences by breaking down barriers and helping others connect with nature. Her efforts ensure that people of all abilities or backgrounds have access to birding and can share in her passion for the natural world. Libby aims to make science accessible and welcoming, and she believes that "everyone is a birder—they just don’t know it yet."
