Haiga Painting:by Ion Codrescu
Haiga painting-a Japanese art combining painting, haiku, and calligraphy-was created in the 17th century but still influences Western artists today. In this session, Ion Codrescu, a world-renowned haiga artist and haiku poet, will examine haiga's roots and influences, offer examples of celebrated works, and show how the best haiga juxtapose image and text to create something more than the sum of its parts. Since its "emigration" to Western cultures, haiga has created new opportunities for artists to expand the possibilities of the form and explore their own creative potential. See how the spirit of haiga can inspire your own work. Ion Codrescu is an internationally renowned haiga artist and haiku poet. He has illustrated more than 100 books, magazines, and journals, and his paintings can be found worldwide in private collections and museums (including in the Setagaya Art Museum and the Gunma Prefectural Museum in Japan). His poems and essays have been translated into multiple languages, and the latest book, Something Out of Nothing: 75 Haiga, is available from Red Moon Press. In 2007 he received his Ph.D. in Visual Arts from the National University of Arts in Bucharest with a thesis on "Image and Text in Japanese and Western Haiga Painting." We hope you'll join us.
