Event Description:
Employment-related laws continue to evolve, particularly those laws affecting how hospitality industry businesses in Massachusetts pay employees. The United States Department of Labor and the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General have targeted the hospitality industry for compliance audits and have emphasized the use of stiffer penalties (such as multiple damages and civil monetary penalties) when enforcing immigration and wage and hour laws. Wage and hour law and immigration law changes and changes to the seasonal worker landscape has also caused an increase in litigation and enforcement actions in these fields.
On Wednesday, May 27, 2020 the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce will sponsor an important and informative webinar designed to provide our membership with all of the tools necessary to comply with wage and hour laws. You will also hear from immigration law expert Matthew Lee regarding seasonal workers and other immigration issues. Topics to be addressed include:
  • The nuts and bolts of seasonal foreign worker compliance;
  • How to comply with both federal and state law (and why employers must do both);
  • How to avoid common, but potentially crippling, mistakes in calculating and paying minimum wage and overtime;
  • Compliance with the Massachusetts and Federal Tipping Law;
  • Common mistakes by restaurateurs and hotel/motel owners;
  • Personal liability, multiple damages and attorneys’ fees exposure under Massachusetts and federal law;
  • What you should do if faced with a government audit or threatened litigation.
This Is the only seminar designed for the hospitality industry featuring a speaker from the agency charged with enforcing these laws.
