Mushroom Walk
The Cape Cod Mushroom Club is sponsoring a walk at Dennis Pond in Yarmouthport. The walk will begin at 10 AM and is open to the public.
To get there, take Exit 7 off the Mid-Cape Highway, go right off the ramp and head north on Willow Street one mile to its junction with Route 6A and take a right. Follow it for 0.4 miles through Yarmouthport center and take a right at the flashing yellow arrow on Summer Street. Parking is in 0.4 miles at the pond on the right just beyond the railroad tracks. Members usually gather at the parking lot for the walk.
There are three major trails at Dennis Pond. One follows the south side of the pond and is very scenic, albeit narrow with dense vegetation. There is a small stand of beech trees at one point along the water’s edge. A second trail leaves the railroad tracks heading east and joins up with the Yarmouth Botanical Trails. This is an active railroad, so pay attention. A third leaves the railroad tracks heading west on the north side of the pond. It is much wider, and the forest is more open. Follow along the railroad bed shoulder and the trail leaves the tracks shortly on the left.
Bring binoculars as there may be some birdwatching opportunities.
