NOW: The Songs of Karen Carpenter
A musical tribute to one of the most iconic singers of all time, presented by Brave Horse Music, which brought you The Beat Goes On, What the World Needs Now and Love Is Blind. The Carpenters were the biggest-selling group of the 70s. No fewer than ten of their singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005 combined worldwide sales of albums and singles well exceeded 100 million units. Yet the Carpenters were much more than creators of beautifully crafted and hugely successful hit records. Within the space of just a few years their unique and inimitable sound had brought a new dimension to the world of popular music. Now will explore the musical life of Karen & Richard Carpenter through their music, interspersed with audio & video recordings and projected images. The title of the show comes from Karen’s last recording session in the spring of 1982. The show will feature many of Richard’s gorgeous compositions written with longtime collaborator John Bettis. We will also delve into many of their earlier recorded demos that were created in bassist, Joe Osborn’s garage, the music that was released posthumously but not forgetting the many popular hits that catapulted them to fame. We will explore her lovely solo album that she recorded in 1979-80 with producer Phil Ramone that A & M shelved, much to her dismay & devastation which remained unreleased till 1996. The performers are singer songwriter Jordan Renzi, theater pop singer Kristin Fehlau, theater veteran singer Anthony Teixeira and creator Ruth Condon. All vocal and music arrangements will be written by Musical Director Malcolm Granger who will also lead the 4 piece band. The show will be directed by Anthony Teixeira and choreographed by Pamela Wills. $25. Complimentary refreshments. Tickets at www.cultural-center.org or by calling 508-394-7100.
